‘A View of the British Army on the Present Establishment, 1803.’
Presented to the Army’s Commander-in-Chief, the Duke of York, by ‘his most humble, most obedient and most dutiful Servant Charles Philip de Bosset, Swiss Regt. de Meuron.’
The chart outlines the structure of the British Army on the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, with all its infantry, cavalry and artillery formations. It includes several foreign regiments, such as the West Indian Regiments (one of whom is depicted in the lower right illustration), and specialists like the 95th Rifles.
Can you spot any famous regiments? Or, for those in the UK, can you see your local regiment?

#OnThisDay 1812 the Spanish city of Badajoz was stormed by British infantry under Wellington’s command. They captured the French-held city at the cost of 4,800 casualties. Many British soldiers then went on the rampage, looting and murdering around 250 Spanish civilians before discipline was restored.
We’ve dramatised eyewitness accounts of this ferocious battle, alongside many others, in our Voices of the Peninsular War video. Watch now here: https://youtu.be/NoMVoQAWs-s?si=ehGa7...

#OnThisDay in 1841 William Henry Harrison - the ninth president of the USA - died after serving just 30 days in office, making it the shortest US presidency in history. Harrison was also the last US president to be born a British subject, gave the longest inaugural address in history (about 1 hour 45 minutes) and was the first president to die in office.
But if Harrison’s was the shortest, who holds the record for the longest presidency?

By 1799, General François Joseph Lefebvre (1755-1820) had a reputation as a tough, no-nonsense soldier. As the military commander of Paris that year, Napoleon desperately needed his support for his planned coup against the Directory - the government of France.
Lefebvre was initially doubtful, but Napoleon won him over with some well-chosen words, and the gift of a sabre, that he claimed to have worn at the Battle of the Pyramids.
The general’s support was crucial to the success of Napoleon’s ‘Brumaire Coup’. And when Napoleon became Emperor five years later, Lefebvre was rewarded with the title of Marshal of the Empire.
He went on to lead Napoleon’s Old Guard in several famous battles, including the Battle of Jena in 1806, and was later made Duke of Danzig as reward for capturing the city from Prussian forces in 1807.
Marshal Lefebvre is buried close to Marshal Masséna at the Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
